We visit with a couple of up-and-coming pitmasters on Episode 38 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Show Podcast – Smiley Mondragon of Smilin’ Dragon BBQ out of Springfield, Mo., and Mike Peterson from Kansas City’s Fat & Dumb BBQ.
Smiley’s had a tremendous 2019, just his second full season of KCBS competition. He recently scored his first perfect 180, in winning Pork at a comp in Jonesboro, Arkansas to go with a first-place in ribs earlier this season. Smilin’ Dragon also competed in its first American Royal Open, finishing in the top 25 percent of the 467-team field. But the highlight was young Ayva Mondragon finishing 3rd and getting on the stage for Kids’ Q.
Fat & Dumb BBQ is one of the sport’s great names. But there’s nothing dumb about their cooking. Mike and his team recently had 3 perfect 180s and an almost unheard of total score of 714 – third-best in KCBS history – to take the Grand Championship at the Shawnee Great Grillers in Shawnee, Kansas, a couple of weeks ago.
