Driving long stretches of lonely highly doesn’t bother Rob Turner, pit master for Canadian competition BBQ team Bigg Smoak out of Manitoba. Good thing as Rob usually has to drive at least 1,000 miles to find a comp with a decent number of teams. He’s taking this week off after spending two weeks in the central part of the United States, first in Branson, Mo., and then last weekend near Kansas City for a doubleheader at Boo-B-Que. Bigg Smoak had a big weekend, winning Grand Championship honors on Day 1 and finishing 5th on Day 2. The results moved Rob into the top 10 of the KCBS Team of the Year race and to the top of the Canadian BBQ Society points list.
On Episode 380 of the Tailgate Guys BBQ Podcast, we learn how Rob went from trucker to pit master, the origin behind his team’s unique name and about how he came to own a BBQ legend’s trailer and smoker.
We also catch up with The Grill Guys of Missouri and what they have that can help you successfully smoke that Thanksgiving turkey. And show co-host Lyndal Scranton reviews the Tailgate Guys’ competition team’s weekend at Boo-B-Que, which was quite the opposite of Bigg Smoak’s.
